Upward by Wassily Kandinsky Ute Rathmann and fine decorative detail ofUpward is among Kandinsky's most direct expressions of spiritual elevation through pure form. A dense cluster of shapes at the lower register gives way to lighter, more dispersed elements rising toward an open ground the visual equivalent of a held note resolving into silence. Painted during his Bauhaus years, the work distils his theory of inner necessity: that colour and form alone can carry the weight of feeling without recourse to representation.
