Unfortunately, it seems like Wizards of the Coast dramatically underestimated how powerful the Companion ability would be, and the entire mechanic had to be nerfed after the cards featuring it were released

The Slug in his rocket can be seen in the bottom right of the card as he zooms through and messes up the flavor text

There are more powerful ramp lands, much more powerful ramp effects, more powerful late game value lands and again, much more powerful value effects on offer

The same is true to attacking into a Caltrops or something similar
